The Gut Feeling
There is much data stored in our right brain which we are unconscious of. Most people have experienced what is called a "Gut Feeling" ; and at one time or another, people have experienced a voice talking to them even though no one else is present. These are right-brain emotional assessments trying to get through to our reasoning, objective left brain. The vast experience of hearing a voice when no one has actually spoken occurs because we have a split hemisphere in our brains -- the left & right hemisphere. Today our focus will be that of the right hemisphere, known here on out as the right-brain.
A Flash of Insight
When thinking of an idea or pondering a question, we are normally conscious only of our reasoning, left hemisphere.[where logical thinking takes place] Occasionally our more intuitive right-brain will receive a flash of insight, putting together apparent unrelated pieces of information that makes a sudden eye-opener. Your right-brain sees and feels in pictures, while the left-brain thinks and reasons in words. To better understand about how our right-brain works, consider autistic persons, commonly know as savants. Unlike most people, whose consciousness is centered in our verbal reasoning left-brain, autistics' consciousness is centered in their right-brain; which sees in pictures in contrast to thinking in words. As an example take the movie Rainman w/Dustin Hoffman. The autistic Hoffman scans a telephone book, the next day while in a diner he asks his waitress her name, and Hoffman immediately tells the waitress her address and telephone number. This ability is not fiction. Autistics are highly concentrated and do not perform well in many daily activities, making them appear retarded; Often they demonstrate genius-like traits in specific right-brain areas. i.e. Mathematical wizards, photographic memories, and musical genius. Normally, information comes from our right-brain into our left-brain to be analyzed, but you can learn to get in direct touch with your right-brain. Hypnosis, self-hypnosis, and meditation are techniques we use to suppress our left-brain conscious minds to get in direct contact with our subconscious right-brain minds.
Eureka! That's It!
A normal person is seldom aware of their right-brain,because it is not our rational side. The right-brain is also considered our survival area. We see, hear, and feel for our survival. As an example, say you are out walking an unfamiliar nature trail. Suddenly you see a predator coming your way. You have to react instantly, without logic, rationality, or without any reference to past or future. This spontaneous here & now action is a right-brain function. Awareness of the past and future are left-brain rational functions. Our right-brain sees parallel patterns and associations among seemingly unrelated facts and events. It sees in one area a pattern that is parallel to something else in another area. Then all of a sudden the right-brain will make a connection between what seemed unrelated, resulting in completely new insights. When your right-brain sends this unrelated information over to the left brain, you become more aware of insights; This is the light-bulb that goes off in your mind when you think of new creative ways and or ideas. Many of these new insights result from struggling with problems that the left-brain can not figure a solution to. This is why geniuses such as Einstein, Newton, and many others suddenly had eureka-like insights while bathing{mind at rest}, sitting under an apple tree{mind is peaceful}, or while shaving{mind is careful}. Your left-brain is relaxed during these moments, allowing right-brain insights to come alive. When the right-brain sends breakthroughs to our left-brain, it seems to come out of nowhere. Our right-brain is visual and sensual with perceptions in pictures, touch, depth and spatial organization. People seldom take the time to step back and really think about their lives, what to prioritize, goals, and what we really want to accomplish. In meditation you do this; it can only be beneficial. One of the great functions of the right-brain is that it generates a lot of creativity. The right-brain can see a whole picture at once. * a key to original, creative insights... The Right-Brain.

These ideas echo that of Jill Bolte Taylor's book My Stroke of Insight. Good stuff. And soooo true! This is the kind of thinking that is useful for creativity as well as experiencing life to its fullest.
